Contact Harris Steels if you would like to request a price, place an order, or have any further questions about our Hot-rolled Universal Beam, Hot Rolled Sections & Column steel stock range.
Hot rolled Universal Beams and Columns, commonly referred to as UB, UC, RSJ, I beam and H beam are a versatile low cost, low carbon product suitable for a wide variety of applications. Although the product is commonly referred to as I beam, H beam and RSJ (rolled steel joist), RSJ’s are a different product with a similar profile and not a direct alternative, I and H simply refer to the shape. Metric European beams (IPE, IPN, HE, HL) are also available in the UK, however they are still not commonly specified by architects and structural engineers.
The sizes of UB and UC we stock today are converted from the previous imperial dimensions and can also be of different dimensions to the headline size of the material, e.g. 254 x 254 mm x 107kg/m (10” x 10” x 107kg/m) is actually 267 x 259 mm. The products are extensively used in the construction industry for steel framed buildings due to the products shape having a very high efficiency when carrying shear and bending forces when used in the correct orientation to the applied load, the product can also be split through the web to produce structural Tee’s with various leg dimensions.
The product was previously available in S275 grade however this is now largely superseded by the higher tensile S355 material, due to the improved mechanical characteristics in construction, the material is also easily fabricated and machined without the need for special tooling.
The outside of the bar in the AR (as rolled) condition has a blue/grey coloured finish, this is known as the surface scale. When required the surface scale is removed by shot blasting then primer painted to protect the bare metal from corrosion. Hot dip galvanising is also used when the product is employed in harsh environments such as marine harbours.
UB’s and UC’s are manufactured in the same rolling process that produces all hot rolled long products but unlike flats, squares and rounds etc. UB’s and UC’s due to their end use are rolled in a wide range of standard sizes, 12.2 metre lengths are stocked on site and cut to length as required with 6, 9.5, 10, 11, 13 and 14 metre lengths also available on short lead-times.
