About this product
Hot rolled coil is one of the most widely used steel products available and feeds into almost every industry from automotive to Security to tube manufacture. Hot rolled coils are generally produced from continuously cast slabs. The slab is heated in a walking beam furnace to around 1200°C and then passed through roughing and finishing mills and coiled up to produce the finished product.
After heating in the furnace the slab reacts with oxygen in the air and forms an oxide surface scale which must be removed prior to any rolling, if not removed the oxide scale will be rolled into the material resulting in a poor surface quality and problems with down-stream products and processing. High pressure water is used before and between passes on the roughing mill to remove the oxide scale. The roughing mill will reduce the slab in thickness by around 85% to produce what is termed as a transfer bar. The transfer bar is then coiled up in a coil box in some mills to reduce space requirements and increase production capacity, a coil box will also help to equalise the steels temperature at both ends and help improve quality. The coil is then transferred from the coil box and undergoes further oxide scale removal before and between moving through the finishing mill.
The transfer bar now termed as a strip will move through the finishing mill stands only once and will be reduced in thickness from around 30 mm down to a minimum of 1.5 mm (the durbar/floor plate pattern is also rolled at this stage). From the finishing mill the strip is water cooled at a controlled rate to produce the materials desired microstructure and mechanical properties before being coiled in at temperatures between 150°C and 750°C. The finished coil is now ready for despatch to customers or for further processing to produce hot dipped galvanised or cold reduced coil.
