Contact Harris Steels if you would like to request a price, place an order, or have any further questions about our (Electric Resistance Welded) ERW Round Tube, ERW Square Tube and ERW Rectangular Tube steel range.
Electric Resistance Welded tube (ERW) is a strong very light weight product sometimes called precision tube due to its high quality surface finish and close manufacturing tolerances. ERW’s are rolled using the same cold forming process as structural hollow sections but are not used in structural or load bearing applications, instead the product is extensively used for furniture manufacture and shop display racking where light loading and a high quality surface finish are critical without extra processing.
Thicknesses of 1.5 mm and above are generally rolled from hot rolled pickled and oiled (HRPO) coil. Acid pickling removes the hot rolled (HR) coil surface scale and exposes the clean bare steel beneath, a thin oil is then applied to protect the steel from oxygen and other environmental factors during transport and storage that will cause material degradation.
Thicknesses below 1.5 mm are rolled using cold reduced (CR) coil as HR coil is not available below this thickness. For applications requiring a higher quality surface finish ERW tube rolled using CR material is available up to 3 mm thickness however this is not a standard product due to higher material costs. HRPO is a very good quality product and suitable for most applications.
The material is characterised by a bright silver finish with light oil and small raised internal weld seam. The profile is accurate and corner radii are small, external tolerances start at +/- 0.2 mm with +/- 10% applicable to wall thickness. As a standard product ERW tube is not supplied with a mechanical cert due to the material being unsuitable for load-bearing applications. Instead, the low yield point and chemical values lend themselves to being easily machined, cold formed and fabricated into many demanding geometries.
ERW is manufactured to both metric and imperial dimensions in the UK, standard lengths are limited to 6 metres on all sizes however bespoke lengths are available on request at relatively short lead-times when compared to merchant bar and other hot rolled products.
At Harris Steel Ltd, we provide a range of ERW Tubes. Our range includes ERW square tube, ERW round tube and ERW rectangle tubes.
