Steel I Beams Information

Steel I beams also known as Hot Rolled Universal Beams and Columns, UB, UC, RSJ, and H beams—are a flexible, low-cost, low-carbon material that may be used in a broad range of applications. Although the product is also known as an I beam, a H beam, and an RSJ (rolled steel joist), these terms merely describe the form; steel I beams and steel H beams are separate products with a similar profile. Although metric European beams (IPE, IPN, HE, and HL) are now available in the UK, architects and structural engineers still do not frequently specify them.

The sizes of Steel I beams that we carry now are translated from the former imperial measurements and can potentially be less or larger than the headline size of the material, for example, 267 x 259 mm for 254 x 254 mm x 107kg/m (10″ x 10″ x 107kg/m).

Steel I Beam Uses

Due to the steel I beams‘ shape, which has a very high efficiency in carrying shear and bending forces when utilized in the correct orientation to the applied load, they are widely used in the construction industry for steel-framed buildings. The steel I beams can also be split through the web to produce structural Tee’s with different leg dimensions.

The higher tensile S355 material has mainly replaced the S275 grade of steel I beams due to its enhanced mechanical properties in construction. The material is also simple to produce and mill without the need for specialised machinery.

Steel I Beam Quality

The surface scale is the blue/gray finish that covers the exterior of the bar in the AR (as rolled) condition. When necessary, shot blasting is used to remove the surface scale, and then primer is applied to the metal to prevent corrosion. When the product is utilised in hostile conditions, such as maritime harbours, hot dip galvanising is also used.

Unlike flats, squares, and rounds, etc., UBs and UCs are made using the same rolling method that creates other hot rolled long items. Due to their intended function, UBs and UCs are rolled in a variety of standard sizes. In addition to being supplied on-site and cut to length as needed, 12.2 metre lengths are also readily available in 6, 9.5, 10, 11, 13, and 14 metre lengths with short lead times.
