Galvanised coil is most commonly available with a smooth finish (minimised spangle), however bright spangled is also available. Both products have a smooth flat surface with the spangled product having a snow flake patterned appearance. The snow flake pattern is the visible grain structure of the zinc and is due to impurities or alloying elements within the molten zinc.
Bright spangled products are not recommended for use where painting or plastic powder coating is to be applied due to spangle part showing in finished product.
Galvanised coil is produced using hot rolled pickled (HRP) coils for material thicknesses of 2 – 4 mm and full hard CR coils for thicknesses below 2 mm. Both products are de-coiled through a continuous annealing line before passing through molten zinc at around 450°C, an air knife ensures the correct thickness of zinc is applied to the surface. The coil is then air cooled, before water cooling, skin pass rolling and tension levelling. Chemical corrosion prevention treatments are added inline to the product surface prior to tension reeling back to coil to reduce the occurrence of zinc oxides (white rust) forming during transport.
